The wintertime can be a difficult period for many. While we’re told it is the season to be jolly, and of course parts of it are, we also see the days get shorter and colder, with the reduced hours of sunlight playing a much bigger part in our day-to-day; with many often setting out to work before light and returning home after it.
Many people live with seasonal affective disorder (SAD), which is a type of depression experienced during different seasons or times of the year. Symptoms can include lack of energy, difficulty concentrating and often feelings of sadness, anxiety and agitation.
There are ways to manage such symptoms and sooth any struggles you may be going through, with crafting working for some people.
Stephen Buckley, Head of Information at Mind said, “We know that crafting can be a powerful way to support mental health and wellbeing. Creative activities like card-making or knitting require focus, which may help us disconnect from daily pressures and find a welcome distraction. Learning a new skill can also bring a sense of accomplishment, which can be especially rewarding as the nights draw in. The repetitive motions of these crafts can feel meditative and calming, making them a helpful tool for managing stress, depression, and anxiety. Different things will work for different people and the main thing is finding a craft you enjoy and which fits into your life.”
Below, we’ve highlighted some ideal crafts to benefit a person’s mental health and help improve wellbeing during the winter months.
