Hallowed Ground revisits the relationship of Josh and Ember. A few years have passed since we first met them, and now they’ve endured the challenges of military life. This book delivers a realistic portrayal of what having a relationship with someone in the military is like, sympathetically portraying the impact it can have on everyone involved. The beauty of this book is that despite it being heartbreaking at times, there is hopefulness to the book so that even at its darkest points, you feel like Ember and Josh have a real chance.
The Reality of Everything (2020)

- A book that deals with some pretty heavy subjects in an empathetic and sweet way
- A really mature depiction of love, where it takes patience and kindness on top of attraction and chemistry.
The Reality of Everything follows Morgan Bartley, who is still grieving after the man she loved was killed in Afghanistan. As she tries to put her life back together, she sets about renovating a house. Next door is single Dad and Coast Guard pilot Jackson Montgomery. As she gets to know her neighbour, there’s an attraction, and Morgan is suddenly faced with having to deal with her reluctance to open up and love again. The evolution of the relationship between Jackson and Morgan is what makes this book special. It isn’t love at first sight, and there’s plenty of patience shown as Morgan gets to a place where she’s okay with letting herself be happy again.
Reason to Believe (2018)
Why we love it:
- This book has more than a few tropes, but they are beautifully executed, so you just don’t care.
- The two lead characters are so easy to connect with that you are drawn in straight away.
When her pre-k student and his brother need emergency foster care, Harper turns to Knox Daniels, her brother's friend and her secret crush, for help. He agrees to let them stay at his new place while he’s out of town. Except he comes back early, and they both have to deal with their old feelings. There are obviously more than a few tropes in this book - the brother's best friend, two people forced to live together - but they’re effectively used here with it being a realistic portrayal of their emotions. Throw in a mix of angst, playful moments and some undeniable chemistry, and you’ve got a really great romance book.
Renegades Books In Order
Wilder (2016)
Why we love it:
- A really dishy heartthrob that will make you swoon.
- The book's writing has plenty of heart and depth, exploring really important themes

When the cautious Leah meets the wild Paxton, an attraction too powerful to ignore crashes through the air. Even if we ignore the fact that Paxton is a thrilling and dangerous heartthrob who’s very swoon-worthy, this book has plenty to offer. The writing has plenty of heart and depth, as it explores the importance of taking a chance and trying to live your life fully. So you may come for the dishy heartthrob, but you’ll probably stay for the emotional journey that the characters go through.
Nova (2017)

- Rich character as both Landon and Rachel journey towards healing and reconciliation.

It’s a book that has everything, forbidden love, intense chemistry and heart-pounding moments combined with well-crafted and relatable characters. If you’re looking for an easy read for your next book, then you could do a lot worse than read Rebel.
In Luv Series
Girl in Luv (2019)
Why we love it:
- A really short and easy read if you’re looking for something quick and good.
- A Cinderella-esque narrative with a modern twist.
Sometimes you just want a book that is quick, easy and heartwarming. That’s exactly what Girl in Luv by Rebecca Yarros is. It’s a tale of unexpected romance as Langley seeks a date to her step-sister's wedding. She meets Iker, they fake a relationship and things start to get a little complicated. This isn’t breaking new ground, but the characters are really engaging and well-written, and the story moves along at a real pace as their romance develops so that it’s a really fun and light read.
Boy in Luv (2019)
Why we love it:
- Beautiful chronicles Iker and Langley’s relationship as they try to rekindle their romance.
- Plenty of lighter moments in between the odd tear.
This book is the second collaboration between Rebecca Yarros and Jay Crownover and follows on from Girl in Luv 9 months later, with Iker returning and determined to win Langley back. This second-chance romance beautifully chronicles both character's growth as they have gone from a fake relationship to rekindling their romance. Unlike some of Yarros’s other romances, it’s a little lighter in tone with plenty of laughs in between the odd tear, which makes this book (and the series) a really great entry point if you’re wondering which Rebecca Yarros book to read first.
Empyrean
Fourth Wing (2022)
Why we love it:
- A fast-paced plot combined with vivid world-building makes this a real page-turner.
- Deep and well-constructed character arcs that will make you feel like you know them inside and out.
If you haven’t heard of Fourth Wing, you’ve either been trapped on a tropical island with no signal, or you just don’t go on social media at all. It feels like everyone is reading this book, and for good reason. It’s a riveting fantasy romance that perfectly blends action, angst and heartfelt romance. It follows Violet Sorrengail’s journey as she tries to become a dragon rider. Her path crosses with Xaden Riorson, who is a wing leader. Their attraction is undeniable, but without giving away spoilers, their relationship is a little bit complicated, and Rebecca Yarros takes you on a vivid and captivating journey through that. It’s a standout read and one the best books that Rebecca Yarros has written.
Iron Flame (2023)
Why we love it:
- More of the same. Tension, chemistry, twists, turns (and that’s just the dragons) and pure escapism.
- A little slower in pace than the first allowing for greater character development.
Iron Flame picks off where Fourth Wing finished. It’s a gripping fantasy book following Violet as she struggles to try and become a dragon rider whilst dealing with more than a few personal battles. Extra layers are added to Violet and Xaden’s relationship as secrets are revealed, which just adds to the already palpable tension that exists between the two of them. This book will leave you anxiously awaiting the next instalment of the serious, just hoping that there is more of the same to come.
